We visit Kirkwood, near Tahoe, to celebrate my birthday and to attend a friends wedding.

Purni had been wanting to celebrate my 40th birthday with a weekend trip somewhere, and the weekend happend to co-incide with the wedding of a past Nest colleague and Friend (Kelly) near Tahoe, in the Sierras. We decided to combine both things and make a long weekend of it. We rented a dog friendly Airbnb in Kirkwood for the weekend.

Thursday was spent driving to Brentwood, and cooling off there, before leaving later (to avoid the 100+ deg heat) and heading to kirkwood.

Friday

On Friday, after some trouble adjusting to altitude, we decided to have a relaxing day, and opted to go visit nearby caples lake in the late morning.

I managed to convince some reluctant passengers on going out on a kayak with me, so we spent 30 minutes or so paddling out into the lake. The Trees were in some serious pollen, and the surface of the lake was covered in it.

Going out onto the water

Post kayaking, we joined Parents and Purni in a nice shaded spot for some snacks and relaxing.

That afternoon, we went for a stroll in Kirkwood meadow, to enjoy the wildflowers, and streams running through the meadow.

Saturday

The wedding was on Saturday afternoon, and the plan was to take it easy in the morning, and attend the wedding in the late afternoon / early evening.

I was feeling a little cabin fever, and decided to go on a short hike. I made it almost all the way to lake Margaret, starting from the condo, which added a couple more miles to the walk. It was a nice shaded trail, with not many views, but LOTS of mosquitoes. I ended up meeting a pair of wedding attendees on the trail, which was a nice co-incidence.

Post hike and Lunch, we got ready and headed over to The Hideout, which was the venue for the wedding. A beautiful location, tucked deep inside the sierras, and surrounded by nature. It truly was a beautiful spot for the wedding. The Kids really enjoyed dressing up for the occasion, meeting people, and having new experiences. We enjoyed a lovely outdoor ceremony, with really touching vows, and enjoyed a lovely dinner with great conversation with a crew of ex-Nesters, and amazing food.

Sunday

We decided to make Sunday a Tahoe day. A planned visit to a nice Vegan Cafe was a bust, since the Cafe had shut down due to Covid. We found ourselves at Nikki’s Chaat cafe againfor lunch, with memories of our Tahoe trip from a few years back with Suba and family.

Post lunch, we decided to go to Kiva Beach in South Lake Tahoe. Everyone enjoyed a mild dip in the water, even Rango, who is still not too happy about being wet above his knees.

After we had our fill of the beach, we drove a short distance to Inspiration Point to take in the view of Emerald Bay and Fanette islan, before heading back to kirkwood.

Monday

Feeling pretty tired and Lazy after all the driving the provious day, Monday, our last day was more chill. We decided to go spend some time in nearby Silver Lake. We drove to the Sandy Cove Picnic area, found a nice secluded spot under the trees, and spent an afternoon exploring the shallow lake, walking aming the rocks, finding and admiring the small fish in the water, and just enjoying a day outdoors.

Dipping our toes in Silver Lake.
Tejas enjoyed clambering all over the rocks and exploring with me...
... while Purni and Aarav worked non a waterworks project...
... And Rango enjoyed chilling out with the grand (dog) parents

Overall, we had a relaxing weekend and a good beginning to a summer break for the Kids!
